Who are we?
Cadhan Aonair, LLC is a private company founded in 2008 that provides technology services to the Irish language community around the world. Our mission is to enable Irish speakers to live their computing life completely through the language by providing software, proofing tools, web sites, APIs, and software localisations.
In the menu to the left, you'll find links to all of our products. Everything here is freely available, along with the source code and open datasets that power our software. Making these resources available under open licenses enables other developers to use them as the basis for their own projects. We believe strongly that this is the best way to ensure a healthy technology ecosystem for the Irish language online.
Kevin Scannell, professor of Computer Science at Saint Louis University, is the founder of Cadhan Aonair. He is an American of Irish descent, born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1970. He studied mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned a BS in 1991 and received his doctorate (also in mathematics) from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1996. He spent two years as a postdoctoral instructor Rice University in Houston, Texas before coming to St. Louis in 1998.
Kevin began learning Irish in the 1990s and soon thereafter began developing software to help other learners and fluent speakers use the language online. The GaelSpell spell checker was his first large-scale project involving the Irish language, initially released in the year 2000.
